Transport and Highways Group

In the group we look at a wide range of transport issues as they affect older people. We continually look at issues such as the cost of concessionary travel, the quality of bus services and travel safety.

We work closely with Nexus, the City Council, the Universities and with the local bus operators such as Stagecoach.

In addition, we are consulted on transport initiatives, both National and Regional. We also nominate representatives to the Tyne and Wear Older Peoples' Transport Forum.

We meet bi-monthly and any member of the Elders Council is welcome to join the Group.

Getting By with a Little Help: exploring alternative models of care and support at home

As older people, we know that social care is in urgent need of reform with fewer people getting the help they might need to remain independent at home.  A group of Elders Council members set out to explore alternative models of care and support.  Their findings are available in a report in the Reports section of the website.  Elders Council is now discussing the findings with Newcastle City Council and others in the hope that more innovative models of care will be offered in the city.
